Thank you for your comments. I like your phrase about people finding their ‘true retired self.’
I believe this may be someone who appears different from their ‘working self’ Or maybe the tue self is waiting to be let out when the time is right. You just have to be willing to set it free!

Your list of five golden rules offers good advice. I especially like “do what you enjoy” and “do what you’ve always wanted to do.” In fact, it’s important for a retired person to find “their true retired self.” This, however, will generally not come easily. A newly retired person might “flounder around” for a few months (or a couple of years) before finding “their true retired self.” Bill

Susan is right – when you retire, you should be able to do whatever you want. My father took advantage of an equity release scheme, and used some of the cash to go on a wine tour of North America. He loved it, and plans to go back next year.

I have lots of time for Abbeyfield.

I think though that the organisation is very variable across the UK in that some areas are well provided for whilst others are not.

i like the pragmatic approach you talk about. i really do seem to be just waiting. and i am busy but i know i could be doing something. one of the main things i need to do is pay off my OD acct. and another is to sell my business. so okay make a list for each and begin to nibble away.

I really liked your post because it showed that when you are retired you really can go where your spirit leads you. You don’t have to follow any more work routines and it’s fine to do things differently. So glad you didn’t mind me re-printing it.

Imagine my surprise to see readers linking from an unfamiliar source. And then to discover a reprint of one of my posts. And it wasn’t even a post that I had positive feelings about because it highlighted that I can’t keep my emotions under control and sometimes just go with a snit. I haven’t much of a chance to check around your blog but I applaud the direction. Planning for retirement is important but less so in the financials than in the psychologicals. I didn’t do either one. Retirement is an opportunity and not a time to rest on your laurels.
